The main story that runs on the surface is great but under the surface this book has a lot more to say if you're willing to take the time to look. I don't want to get into any more detail of the story for fear of running into spoiler territory, but I thoroughly enjoyed The Rain Heron. The coup also seems to be mirrored by nature, once the heroin is removed from its mountain, everywhere they go seems to explode into vegetative life, almost as if nature is fighting back. Zoe used to collect squid ink with her aunt and we're introduced to our first environmental allegory as the Northerner, representing big business, wants to industrialise to ink industry who efforts only ruin the trade and kill the squid, the enviroment. They hear about something and pretty soon they're convinced it belongs to them' The motives of the generals are never actually revealed, but then does big business ever really need much of a reason to slap a trademark on nature?

Robbie Arnott's The Rain Heron is a heart felt dark fantasy novel about Climate Change, The Environment, family, memory and loss.ĭon't believe the synopsis on the rear cover, although Ren is a character, The Rain Heron mostly follows Zoe Harker, a lieutenant in the armed forces of a nameless country, that have taken control of government in a military coup, and her mission to capture the mythological Rain Heron her superiors are not even sure exists. PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS AN UNCORRECTED PROOF FILE SO THERE MAY BE SOME SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES As their lives entwine, unravel and erupt - as myth merges with reality - both Ren and the soldier are forced to confront what they regret, what they love, and what they fear.Ī vibrant homage to the natural world, bursting with beautiful landscapes and memorable characters, The Rain Heron is a beautifully told eco-fable about our fragile and dysfunctional relationships with the planet and with each other, the havoc we wreak and the price we pay.

But when a young soldier comes to the mountains in search of a legendary creature, Ren is inexorably drawn into an impossible mission. High on the forested slopes, she survives by hunting and trading - and forgetting. Ren lives alone on the remote frontier of a country devastated by a coup. A gorgeous, playful and casually brutal novel about war and ecological precarity, about the endurance of legends and the dark magic to be found in our natural world.
